Stuart Gabriel

Stuart Gabriel, Director and Arden Chair

Stuart A. Gabriel is Director of the Ziman Center for Real Estate at UCLA and is Arden Realty Chair and Professor of Finance at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. His research focuses on topics of real estate finance and economics, housing and mortgage markets, urban and regional economics, and macroeconomics. Prior to joining the UCLA faculty, Professor Gabriel was the Lusk Chair in Real Estate and Professor of Finance and Business Economics at the University of Southern California. He also previously served on the economics staff of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. and was a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Professor Gabriel has published approximately 60 articles in economics and finance journals and serves on the editorial boards of seven academic journals. His most recent research focuses on efficiency and equity outcomes in mortgage markets, the effects of housing wealth on macroeconomic activity, house price fluctuations, and the mortgage pricing effects of derivative mortgage-backed securities. Professor Gabriel is the winner of a number of awards for both teaching excellence and for the quality of his published work. He is a past President of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association and currently serves on its Board of Directors. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of Asian Real Estate Society and the Genesis Los Angeles Economic Growth Corporation and a Fellow of the Homer Hoyt Institute for Advanced Real Estate Studies. Professor Gabriel serves on the Boards of Directors of Indymac Bank and KBS REIT and is a consultant to numerous corporate and governmental entities.

   
Jonathon Zasloff

Jonathan Zasloff, Associate Faculty Director

Jonathan Zasloff teaches Torts, Land Use, Environmental Law, Comparative Urban Planning Law, Legal History, and Public Policy Clinic - Land Use, the Environment and Local Government. Professor Zasloff has a keen interest in world politics; he holds a PhD in the history of American foreign policy from Harvard and an M.Phil. in International Relations from Cambridge University. He holds his BA and JD from Yale.

Professor Zasloff has long been active in state and local politics and policy. He recently co-authored an article discussing the relationship of Proposition 13 (California's landmark tax limitation initiative) and school finance reform, and served for several years as a senior policy advisor to the Speaker of California Assembly. His practice background reflects these interests: for two years, he represented welfare recipients attempting to obtain child care benefits and microbusinesses in low income areas. He then practiced for two more years at one of Los Angeles' leading public interest environmental and land use firms, challenging poorly planned development and working to expand the network of the city's urban park system. He currently serves as a member of the boards of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy (a state agency charged with purchasing and protecting open space), the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice (the leading legal service firm for low-income clients in east Los Angeles), and Friends of Israel's Environment.

   
Tim Kawahara

Tim Kawahara, Executive Director

Tim Kawahara is the executive director of the Ziman Center. Mr. Kawahara is directly responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of the Center's numerous programs and activities, internal and external relationships, industry and academic conferences and events, marketing and communications, media relations, student programs, fundraising and strategic partnerships. Mr. Kawahara also manages the day-to-day administration of the Center, including personnel and budget matters.

Mr. Kawahara is a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), Lambda Alpha, The Honorary Society for the Advancement of Land economics and serves on the Advisory Board for Commercial Real Estate Women-Los Angeles.  Mr. Kawahara has also led program initiatives with numerous industry organizations, including the National Association of Office and Industrial Properties (NAIOP), the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Los Angeles County Bar (LACB), the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC), the UCLA Anderson Forecast and the UCLA Extension.  Mr. Kawahara is a graduate of UCLA and the Executive Program of the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

   

Kim Meas, Office Manager

Kimlee “Kim” Meas is the office manager and administrative assistant at the Ziman Center.  Ms. Meas is responsible for managing the office and supporting the directors, as well as implementing many of the Center’s student programs.  Ms. Meas graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in History from UCLA.

   
Stephen Cauley

Stephen D. Cauley, Associate Director for Research

In addition to teaching a real estate investment course for the Ziman Center, Stephen Cauley is the Center’s associate director of research. He conducts research on the application of recent advances in economics, finance and statistics to the valuation of publicly and privately-held real estate, and has developed innovative statistical and visualization techniques to analyze spatial variation in real estate markets. Prior to joining the Center, Dr. Cauley held academic and research positions at the UCLA Department of Economics and at the RAND Corporation, and was a visiting scholar of finance at UCLA Anderson. As a principal of Cauley and Associates, he provides real estate and financial consulting services. Dr. Cauley earned his Ph.D. in economics from UCLA.
