California Mortgage Roundtable

The Ziman Center hosted state legislators, mortgage lenders, and housing finance scholars and pratitioners for a roundtable discussion on the mortgage and housing crisis, and to review a proposal for legislation that seeks to stabilize California's statewide and regional economies and housing markets. State sentaor Ellen Corbett, Chair of the State Judiciary Committee, and state senator Michael J. Machado of the Senate Banking Finance and Insurance Committee, were among the policymakers in attendance at the roundtable, which was held on December 19, 2007 at UCLA Anderson. Economist Ryan Ratcliff of the UCLA Anderson Forecast presented an analysis of mortgage foreclosures and the economic outlook for California. A representative from the Office of Senate President Pro Tempore Don Perata presented the state's proposed plan to keep troubled borrowers in their homes and avoid unnecessary foreclosures, and also provided a comparison between their plan and the federal government's nationwide proposal.
